Welcome to Music!
General Music Classes
General Music is taught to students in grades K-4. Each homeroom receives music for 45 minutes twice a week. In music class we explore singing, playing instruments, composing music, moving to music, and dancing. The new National Core Arts Standards were created in partnership with NAfME (National Association for Music Educators) in June 2014 and adopted by Illinois in February 2016. They fit with the Common Core State Standards used in general education classes. The Core Arts Standards focus on creating music, performing music, responding to music, and connecting music to history, culture, and the world around us. Our music curriculum is closely aligned with these standards.
All General Music classes will have the opportunity to perform in a musical production. The Fall Musical will feature the 3rd and 4th grade classes, and students in 1st and 2nd grade will participate in the Spring Musical. Our Kindergarten students will present a music "Informance" in the spring, where they will demonstrate to parents what they have been learning in music class. Please see this year's performance calendar for specific performance dates. Fourth grade students will learn to play the recorder in the spring.
Instrumental Music (Band) is taught to students in grades 5-8. All band students receive a small group lesson for 30 minutes once a week and attend full band rehearsals. Beginning Band (5th grade) meets Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 11:00-11:45 AM. Concert Band (6th-8th grades) meets every day during "Zero Hour" (7:45-8:30); Concert Band students will need to ride the early bus.
Both bands will perform in the Winter Concert in December and the Spring Concert in May. The 5th-7th grade band students perform at the Eighth Grade Promotion Ceremony at the end of the school year. Additional performances for Concert Band students include Solo and Ensemble Contest, Christmas Caroling, 8th Grade Band Night at BBCHS, 8th Grade Marching Band Night at BBCHS, and the ONU Jr High Honor Band Festival.
